About
Welcome to Restaurant Formanka, an authentic culinary jewel nestled along the D1 Highway, which seamlessly connects Prague and Brno. Located at odpocivadlo, Kochanov, this charming eatery serves as a delightful retreat for travelers looking to escape the fast-food frenzy of the nearby McDonald's.
What sets Formanka apart is its commitment to serving traditional Czech dishes, each brimming with rich flavors and nostalgia. Diners rave about the Svíčková (Czech beef in a creamy vegetable sauce with dumplings) for just 195 CZK; the tender meat and perfectly balanced sauce make it a must-try. The Duck with red cabbage and dumplings, priced at 240 CZK, showcases expertly cooked meat paired beautifully with sweet and tangy red cabbage—a dish that evokes heartfelt memories of home cooking.
For those seeking comfort food, the fried cheese with French fries at 175 CZK is a delightful choice. Melting cheese encased in a crispy coating paired with perfectly crisp fries offers a satisfying experience that speaks to the heart of Czech cuisine. Additionally, the stuffed chicken with croquettes comes highly recommended, with each dish reflecting the chefs' dedication to quality and authenticity.
Despite its slightly rustic charm, Formanka radiates warmth and coziness. The interior, with its traditional country-style decor, provides a welcoming atmosphere that allows diners to relax and savor their meals. While English is not universally spoken, patrons have found that the friendly staff is always willing to assist, ensuring that the dining experience remains pleasant.
What truly captures the essence of Restaurant Formanka is its position as a hidden gem in the Czech countryside. Many travelers may overlook it due to its proximity to a chain fast-food outlet, yet those who take a moment to visit are rewarded with exceptional value and outstanding local cuisine. A meal for two, complete with drinks and a dessert, can cost less than 50 Euros—an unbelievable deal considering the quality of food served.
In conclusion, whether you're embarking on a road trip or simply seeking authentic Czech fare, a stop at Restaurant Formanka is a decision you'll appreciate. The combination of heartfelt dishes and the rustic atmosphere makes it more than just a restaurant; it's an experience steeped in the spirit of Czech hospitality.
“ A nice and cosy restaurant which is directly located at the highway from Prague to Bruno. The food is delicious and priceworthy as well. But they have only a Czech Menu and you need to translate it for your own. Please go to the restaurant instead of the Mc Donalds, which is beside of it. FOOD DRINKS We ordered 4 different dishes. The Svickova with Czech dumblings for 195 CZK, was very delicous and the meat was perfectly cooked. The portion was not good and the sauce was not too sweet and had good taste. The Duck with red cabbage and dumblings for 240 CZK was good as well. The meat was not dry and had a good taste. the red cabbage with some apple was great and a good paring to the meat. Only the dumblings were a little bit to solid and very chewy, but still ok. The fried cheese with French Fries for 175 CZK was a good portion and the cheese was very good cooked, because it was a little bit melted. The French fries were delicious as well. The stuffed chicken with croquettes was a decent dish and had a good taste as well. We could recommend all the dishes. SERVICE Only some waitress spoke English but you can interact with everyone and point on the menu card for the dish that you want. There are alle friendly and will help you as much as they can. RESTAURANT The restaurant is a little bit old fashioned and has a country style, but it was cosy and nice as well. There are only some places inside and the have no outside sitting area. LOCATION The restaurant is located directly at the D1 Highway from Prague to Bruno. There are some parking space for the car. The restaurant is beside a McDonalds and my preference is to visit this restaurant instead of the Mc Donalds. ”
“ Wow. The food was amazing! The duck, the dumplings etc. They have english menu, but firstly gave you czech menu The building is a traditional design. Fantastic! ”
“ Hidden gem behind a highway McDonalds - nothing fancy just simply very good quality local food in a cute setting. ”
“ Formanka is a real gem in the middle of the Czech countryside. It's also a great suprise to find a place like that in a freeway rest area. Located behind a Mc Donalds', unfortunately many people will opt for the latter. However if you're up to trying authentic Czech food, there is no better place to go to. I had the feeling that when the staff cooking here goes home after a long workday, they just prepare the same food the exact same way they do it here for their kids and grandkids. Everything was excellent and the waitress kind and smiling. We tried different soups, Czech specialities like Svíčková and also apple strudel and some plum-filled local dumplings. And one more thing. This is dirt cheap. The 2 of us eat 3 course menus and drinks and one of us just a main dish, and we still paid less than 50 Euros total. What a bargain to have such excellent authentic food! On the flip side they don't accept credit cards. This is basically the only negative thing I can mention here. They do accept Euros though, so don't be afraid to stop by when you are driving between Prague and Brno. ”
“ Easy to miss this gem because of the McDonald's in front of it. Doing so would be a travesty, for the food is succulent and the service nice as well. Nice shade in the outside seating area. ”
“ If you are looking for a place to eat good Czech, this is the place! We were positively surprised by how good the food was. The atmosphere was also very nice. I recommend the goats cheese salad if you are a vegetarian, it was delicious! ”
“ Outstanding food along the highway! Friendly staff, delicious food...big menu with grill and vegetarian options. Everything looked homemade. Dogs welcome. Tradtional interior. Highly recommended! ”
“ Very nice tasty food. Big portions, not too much salt ...just how we like it! Very nice and friendly staff. They sell homemade cakes. ”
